
Director of the National Eye Hospital has called on the public to exercise strict caution when using fireworks during the festive season.
Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara, highlighting the importance of safety when handling items such as firecrackers, “bambara chakras,” and sparklers, noting that improper use can lead to serious injuries.
He stressed that children, in particular, should only handle fireworks under close adult supervision.
According to the Director, every year during the New Year period, the hospital records multiple cases of severe eye injuries caused by firework-related accidents.
Dr. Bandara warned that negligence in handling fireworks could result in permanent vision loss, including lifelong blindness.
He further advised that in the event of an eye injury, individuals should avoid rubbing the eye or applying home remedies. Instead, they should seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital or the National Eye Hospital. (Newswire)
