The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for multiple parts of the country, valid from 12.30 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. today (April 13).
The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, North-Central and Uva provinces, as well as the districts of Galle, Matara, Mannar and Vavuniya.
Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in these areas after 1.00 p.m., with the possibility of temporary localized strong winds, the Met Department said.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning activity. People are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees. Open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies should also be avoided during thunderstorms.
The public is further advised to refrain from using wired telephones and electrical appliances, and to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during adverse weather conditions.
Residents have also been warned to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines, and to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies. (Newswire)
