Severe lightning advisory issued for 15 districts

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a severe lightning advisory for multiple provinces, warning of thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning activity later today.

The advisory, issued at 12.00 noon and valid until 11.00 p.m. on April 19, covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, North Central and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara district.

The Department of Meteorology said thundershowers with severe lightning are likely to occur after 1.00 p.m., with a high risk level and the possibility of temporary strong winds.

The public has been urged to take precautions, including seeking shelter indoors, avoiding open areas and water bodies, and refraining from using wired electrical appliances during thunderstorms. Authorities also warned of potential hazards such as fallen trees and power lines. (NewsWire)
