A suspect linked to the robbery of an elderly man in Dehiwala, an incident that went viral on social media, has been arrested with Ice narcotics, police said.
The arrest was made today (19) by officers of the Dehiwala Police Crimes Division.
Police said the incident took place on April 17 along Waidya Road in Dehiwala, where a 74-year-old man was pushed to the ground and robbed of Rs. 2,100 kept in his shirt pocket.
CCTV footage of the assault circulated widely on social media, prompting police to launch a broader investigation.
During a police operation, the suspect was taken into custody and officers also recovered 5,200 milligrams of Ice in his possession.
The suspect is a 23-year-old resident of Dehiwala.
He is due to be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court on April 20, while Dehiwala Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)
