Above 100 mm of rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

Showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 pm today (21), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Anuradhapura districts. 

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts in the morning. 

The public is  requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, and at a few places in the other sea areas around the island, during the evening or night. 

Winds will variable in direction. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. 

The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
