Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the Ministry of Finance will issue a clarification regarding the alleged diversion of USD 2.5 million in Treasury funds, noting that he did not yet have detailed information on the matter.
The Minister made these comments during the weekly Cabinet media briefing during which journalists questioned the minister on the reported suspension of several Treasury officials following the matter.
Jayatissa acknowledged that a letter had been sent to the Speaker by PC Maithri Gunaratne, urging a Parliamentary probe into the incident.
When asked whether the government would take action based on the letter, he said the Speaker would review the matters outlined and decide if an investigation is required.
The comments come amid concerns raised by Opposition members, including MP Namal Rajapaksa over the alleged loss of USD 2.5 million belonging to the Treasury, reportedly diverted to a third party during a debt repayment.
Reports indicate the funds were part of a USD 22.9 million settlement due in September 2025 and had not reached the intended creditor country. (Newswire)
