Cabinet spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that he has no information regarding reports of the President demanding the resignation of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva, noting that the matter has not been discussed at Cabinet level.

The Minister’s remarks follow media reports claiming that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had asked the SLC President to step down to facilitate the appointment of an interim committee. Those reports further suggested that former MP Eran Wickramaratne was being considered as chairman.

“I have to say that this was not discussed in the Cabinet,” the Minister told reporters during the weekly Cabinet briefing. “As far as I know, and based on the information I have, the President has not made such a request.”

He also acknowledged the public’s emotional attachment to cricket, emphasising that the government’s primary objective remains the development of the sport and maintaining fans’ connection to the game.

“The government will take the necessary decisions regarding this when required,” Jayatissa said, adding that he currently has no information on any active discussions regarding a leadership change within the cricket administration. (Newswire)
