A labour officer has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of accepting a bribe, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said.

The conviction followed a complaint received on September 02, 2009, regarding the bribery incident.

The Colombo High Court delivered the sentence on Thursday (23) after finding the accused guilty on three charges related to soliciting and accepting Rs. 15,000 from a poultry farm owner in Wellawaya in 2009.

The court imposed a six-year prison term for each charge, to run concurrently, along with a fine of Rs. 5,000 per charge. An additional penalty equivalent to the bribe amount was also ordered. (Newswire)
