President Anura Kumara Dissanayake engaged in discussions with the Maha Sangha representing the three Nikayas at a meeting held this afternoon (28) at the Presidential Secretariat, focusing on the arrest of a group of monks at Katunayake Airport with narcotics, related investigations, and the situation that has emerged.
The discussion also examined in detail the next steps required for the preservation of the Buddha Sasana, including proposed amendments to legal provisions such as the Vihara and Devalagam Act.
Attention was also drawn to the fact that the narcotics menace has now become a national disaster, as underscored by the recent incident, with emphasis placed on the need for all parties to strongly support the government’s ongoing anti-drug programme.
The meeting further noted that in the government’s broader efforts to steer the country through economic and social transformation, priority will be given to safeguarding the Buddha Sasana and the value system associated with it. (NewsWire)
