The Supreme Court has ruled that the fundamental rights of a Sub-Inspector of Police were violated in connection with a 2022 assault in which he was subjected to inhumane assault.
The court ordered three police inspectors found responsible for the assault to pay a total of Rs. 1.5 million in compensation from their personal funds, with each required to pay Rs. 500,000.
The ruling also found that the decision to suspend the petitioner following the incident was unlawful and amounted to a further violation of his fundamental rights.
Accordingly, the then Assistant Superintendent of Police in Gampaha was directed to pay an additional Rs. 50,000 in compensation from personal funds.
The case was heard following a fundamental rights petition filed by the Sub-Inspector, who was attached to the Gampaha Police at the time. (Newswire)
