The property belonging to the Mahindananda Foundation, which had operated on a leased basis for nearly 20 years, have been handed back to the Department of Railways.

The Mahindananda Aluthgamage Foundation had been functioning on land owned by the Railway Department.

During a District Coordination Committee meeting held in December last year, officials were instructed to take steps within a month to reacquire the land and the related premises for the Railway Department.

Accordingly, the buildings and land belonging to the foundation were officially handed back to Railway Department officials on Friday morning by Chamika Dharmathilaka, Secretary of the Mahindananda Foundation.

However, he also noted that there is a valid lease agreement in place for the property.

Authorities said that there are plans to utilise the land in future for a public market and for other public purposes benefiting the community. (Newswire)
