
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an advisory for severe lightning valid from 12.00 noon to 11.30 p.m. on 03 May 2026, warning of thundershowers with severe lightning expected in parts of the North Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces, as well as in Badulla, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts after 1.00 p.m.
The public has been cautioned that temporary strong winds may accompany thunderstorms and is urged to take precautionary measures to reduce risk and damage.
The Department of Meteorology advises the public to remain indoors during lightning activity, avoid sheltering under trees, and stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea estates and water bodies. The use of wired telephones, electrical appliances, and open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats is discouraged during thunderstorms.
Authorities also warn of potential hazards from fallen trees and power lines, and urge people to contact disaster management officials in case of emergencies. (NewsWire)
