Opposition MP Jeevan Thondaman has expressed hope that actor‑turned‑politician C. Joseph Vijay, projected to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, will address several issues linked to Sri Lanka.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday (06), Thondaman extended his congratulations to Vijay on his recent victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.
“Given a similar transition in Sri Lanka, maybe this is also an opportunity for Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu to move toward a new chapter with greater understanding, reconciliation and a better narrative about each other built on respect, trust and people‑to‑people ties,” he said.
Thondaman further expressed hope that if elected Chief Minister, Vijay would assist in addressing issues facing Sri Lankans living in camps in Tamil Nadu, the fishermen conflict related to Kachchatheevu, and Indian‑origin Tamils living in the upcountry.
“The fishermen conflict is not between fishermen and the military, but between fishermen of Sri Lanka and India. It is a long‑standing dispute which is yet to be resolved. I expect he will visit Sri Lanka once elected Chief Minister. I hope we can move toward a new relationship and obtain solutions to the issues,” he added
MP Thondaman also said he hopes the new Tamil Nadu government will provide the rightful identity to the hill‑country Tamils in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
