12 major reservoirs and 6 medium‑scale reservoirs under its management are currently releasing water due to the prevailing heavy rainfall, the Irrigation Department said.
Among the major reservoirs discharging water are Rajanganaya in Anuradhapura, Sorabora Wewa in Badulla, Wemedilla, Devahuwa and Nalanda in Matale, Lunugamvehera, Thissa Wewa, Weerawila, Yoda Wewa and Weheragala in Hambantota, Deduru Oya in Kurunegala, and Alikota Ara in Monaragala.
The medium‑scale reservoirs releasing water include Thuruwila in Anuradhapura, Bomburuella in Badulla, Debara Wewa in Hambantota, Saddhatissa and Malinpotta in Monaragala, and Mailankulam in Vavuniya.
Irrigation Director (Water Management) Engineer H.M.D.P.S.D. Herath cautioned that the volume of water being released could change depending on future rainfall.
He urged residents living near reservoirs and in low‑lying areas to remain vigilant and closely follow advisories issued by the Irrigation Department, the Meteorology Department, and the Disaster Management Center. (Newswire)
