The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has recommended that the National Police Commission (NPC) promote Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), with retrospective effect from 25 August 2020.
The recommendation was communicated to the National Police Commission on Wednesday (13), and authorities have also been directed to pay all outstanding salary arrears and allowances due to Abeysekara from the date he was suspended from duty.
Abeysekara was arrested in July 2020 and remained in remand custody for nearly 11 months before being granted bail by the Court of Appeal and reinstated to the police service in 2024 under the provisions of Circular 3/2018 and was subsequently appointed as Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
