Sri Lanka Police have arrested a 25‑year‑old man and his 20‑year‑old wife in connection with a series of daytime house break‑ins in Kilinochchi, recovering stolen property valued at approximately Rs. 7.5 million.

According to the Police, the arrests were carried out by officers of the Kilinochchi Crimes Investigation Division during a crime prevention operation in Kilinochchi town.

Suspicion over the movements of one individual led to questioning, which uncovered links to ten reported burglaries involving stolen property and gold jewellery.

The main suspect, a resident of Shanthapuram engaged in casual employment, was taken into custody along with his wife, who was arrested in Bharathipuram for allegedly assisting in concealing and handling stolen goods.

Police investigations revealed that the couple were directly connected to ten daytime house burglaries reported to Kilinochchi Police. The stolen property recovered is valued at Rs. 7.5 million.

The Police further disclosed that part of the stolen gold had been pawned at two private pawn centres and at the Mannar branch of a bank. Steps have been taken to obtain court orders to recover Rs. 4.9 million worth of pawned gold.

The suspects and case items have been produced before the Kilinochchi Police Station for further legal proceedings, while investigations continue. (Newswire)
