NBRO updates landslide warnings for multiple districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has updated landslide early warnings for several districts across the country amid continuing heavy rainfall, in effect for 24 hours from 4 p.m. Thursday (14) until 4 p.m. Friday (15).

Level 2 landslide warnings, requiring residents to remain on alert, were issued for the Neluwa area in Galle District; Agalawatta, Baduraliya, Matugama, Horana and Walallawita in Kalutara District; Alawwa in Kurunegala District; and Pelmadulla and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District.

Meanwhile, Level 1 “be alert” warnings were issued for several Divisional Secretariat divisions across Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, Monaragala, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts.

Areas placed under Level 1 warnings include Bandaragama, Hali-Ela and Passara in Badulla District; Seethawaka in Colombo District; Elpitiya, Thawalama and Niyagama in Galle District; and Ingiriya and Bulathsinhala in Kalutara District.

A large number of Divisional Secretariat divisions in Kandy and Kegalle districts were also included in the advisory, along with selected areas in Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, Monaragala, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts.

The NBRO urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant for signs of landslides, including ground cracks, leaning trees, unstable slopes and sudden water seepage. (Newswire)
