The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for heavy rainfall, forecasting showers exceeding 150 mm at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Several areas in the Northern Province could also receive rainfall exceeding 100 mm, the advisory noted.

The warning, issued by the department’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday (14), will remain in effect until 8.30 a.m. on Friday (15).

The department said weather data analysed on Thursday (14) morning indicated that the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka remains active and is expected to gradually move away from the island within the next 48 hours.

The Meteorology Department urged the public to take precautions against possible damage caused by strong winds, lightning and thundershowers. (Newswire)
