The meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, under the patronage of Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, focused primarily on proposed legal amendments to facilitate the timely destruction of seized narcotic substances.

Discussions also centred on expediting the completion of the final stage of the relevant legal reforms. The draft amendments prepared by the Cabinet‑appointed Committee on legal reforms were presented to the National Steering Council for consideration.

Officials underscored the importance of ensuring the swift destruction of confiscated narcotics, while the Steering Council shared its views and proposals to strengthen the legal framework.

The draft amendments are scheduled to be submitted to the Legal Draftsman’s Department and the Attorney General’s Department in due course. (Newswire)
