SJB MP Mujibur Rahman has denied claims that he had spoken to a drug suspect while the individual was in remand custody.
Recent media reports had alleged that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP had been in contact with a suspect arrested over drug-related offences and had spoken to him 53 times.
Responding to the allegations, Mujibur Rahman said he had not spoken to any suspect and had already provided a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the matter.
The MP claimed that the SIM card linked to the phone number belonged to a female supporter of his party from Maligawatte, who had previously contacted him using that number.
According to Rahman, the woman had later handed the SIM card to a relative who was subsequently remanded after allegedly becoming addicted to drugs.
He further stated that there had been no calls made to him from inside the remand prison, contrary to claims made by some media outlets.
Rahman said all calls he had received from that number had taken place before the individual was remanded, adding that he has no knowledge of the suspect and had never spoken to him. (Newswire)
