
Two women have died following a road accident in the Hanwella Police Division on the evening of 6 June 2026.
Police said a car travelling towards Embulgama along the Embulgama–Panagoda road collided with two women who were walking in the same direction along the roadside.
The vehicle did not stop after the collision and fled the scene, police said.
Both injured women were admitted to Nawagamuwa Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased have been identified as 42- and 44-year-old residents of Ranala and Girandurukotte.
Following the incident, police launched an investigation based on CCTV footage and information received and arrested the suspect driver along with the vehicle.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Further inquiries are being conducted by Hanwella Police. (NewsWire)
