Work on the Anuradhapura South Multi‑Modal Transport Centre is rapidly progressing, with construction nearing completion after delays caused by the recent economic crisis, according to the Ministry of Urban Development.
The project, centred in Anuradhapura city, was halted midway but resumed in 2024, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2,144 million.
The facility will feature two main terminals: a “Touch & Go” section for passengers boarding and alighting buses passing through the city, and a central bus stand.
In addition, the new Anuradhapura railway station will be integrated into the hub, connected by a secure overhead bridge.
Plans for the railway station include upper‑floor rooms for passenger rest and accommodation, as well as access to taxi services. The bus stand’s upper floor will house two commercial areas and a restaurant, enhancing convenience for travellers.
Construction is being carried out by a private company, with engineering consultancy provided by the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB). Oversight of the project falls under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development.
Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekera recently inspected the construction site, reviewing progress. (Newswire)
