Sri Lankan middle-distance runner Tharushi Abhisheka has won the gold medal in the women’s 1500m event at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, China. The result marks a notable achievement for Sri Lanka at junior level in Asian athletics.
Abhisheka, who is from the Matale District and later developed her athletic career at Wickramabahu National School in Gampola, has been competing in middle-distance events at national and international level over the past few years. She is coached by Buddhika Nuwan, under whose guidance she has continued to develop across both the 800m and 1500m events.
She first gained international exposure in 2024 when she competed in the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Dubai, finishing fourth in the girls’ 800m final. In 2025, she went on to win gold in the 800m at the Asian U18 Athletics Championships in Saudi Arabia, securing her first major international title.
In the latest competition in Hong Kong, Abhisheka produced a strong performance to finish first in the 1500m event, adding another international gold medal to her record and further establishing herself in middle-distance running at Asian level.
Her progress over the past two years has been supported through sponsorship from SCOT Campus, which has played a key role in providing structured backing for her training, preparation, and participation in international competitions. SCOT Campus continues to support emerging Sri Lankan athletes by helping them balance education pathways with high-performance sport, with a focus on long-term athlete development.
With this support, Abhisheka has been able to maintain consistent international exposure at junior level, contributing to her steady improvement across events.
The win in Hong Kong marks another milestone in her growing career as she continues to represent Sri Lanka in regional athletics competitions.
