The United National Party (UNP) on Friday (11) held a meeting of its Management Committee under the patronage of former President and party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, with discussions focusing on rebuilding the party and strengthening coordination with other political forces.
The meeting was held at the party’s political office in Colombo, with the participation of a majority of Management Committee members, according to a statement issued by the UNP.
Members have exchanged views on the current political situation and the UNP’s response to emerging political developments.
Discussion was also focused on the party’s organizational restructuring and efforts to rebuild the UNP at the grassroots level.
Committee members were briefed on future coordination with other political parties, movements and organizations.
Addressing the meeting, Wickremesinghe stressed the importance of facing future political challenges collectively rather than individually.
The party also reaffirmed disciplinary action taken against several local government representatives who had acted in violation of party rules and regulations. The decision, previously announced by the UNP General Secretary, received the continued approval of the Management Committee.
UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said extensive discussions were held on rebuilding the party and strengthening cooperation with other political groups and organizations, leading to several key decisions. (Newswire)
