The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has rejected claims made by a director of Kasagala Green Plantation (Pvt) Ltd. during a television programme, describing the statements as factually incorrect, misleading, and without legal basis.

In a statement issued on 12 June, CBSL said it had been informed that Malwattage Ranjith Nandana Pieris, a director of Kasagala Green Plantation, had stated during the “Pini Viyana” programme aired on ITN on 8 June that the company was regulated by the Central Bank, submitted information to the regulator every six months, and would be subject to inquiries by the CBSL if concerns arose.

The Central Bank formally and categorically denied these claims, stating that the information presented during the programme was inaccurate and misleading.

CBSL further noted that the statements could potentially cause serious harm to members of the public who viewed the programme through television and social media platforms.

The regulator revealed that an investigation is currently being conducted into the activities of Kasagala Green Plantation under the Finance Business Act No. 42 of 2011 to determine whether the company has carried on, or is carrying on, finance business or accepted deposits from the public in contravention of the law.

The Central Bank urged the public to be aware of the ongoing investigation and clarified that the claims made regarding its oversight of the company are not valid.  (Newswire)
