Police have arrested three suspects over an incident in which a car driver was allegedly assaulted and verbally abused following a dispute involving schoolchildren near Sigiriya.
According to police, a video circulating on social media shows two individuals engaging in a confrontation with a driver near the Sigiriya Post Office area on 11 June around 1.45 p.m.
Investigations by the Sigiriya Police revealed that a group of schoolchildren had been celebrating a birthday by throwing eggs at each other when several eggs accidentally struck a parked hired car.
The driver had reportedly advised the children against behaving in such a manner on the road, after which the children cleaned the vehicle.
Police said the video shows two men from a nearby shop approaching the scene after seeing the children cleaning the vehicle and verbally abusing and assaulting the driver, questioning why he had reprimanded the children.
Three suspects, aged 25 and 26 and residents of the Sigiriya and Galewela areas, were identified in connection with the incident and have since been arrested. One suspect had fled the area but was later arrested on the morning of 13 June.
Police said the suspects will be produced before court, while further investigations are ongoing. (NewsWire)
