The United States and Iran have signed an agreement aimed at ending more than 100 days of conflict, with US President Donald Trump confirming that “the deal’s all signed” during remarks alongside French President Emmanuel Macron in France.

The agreement is expected to pave the way for detailed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief. Trump said the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route, will be “completely open” by Friday, when a formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland.

Trump said Iran had agreed not to possess a nuclear weapon and pledged that the commitment would be enforced through what he described as “strong policing”. He added that the full text of the agreement would be released soon.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France, the United Kingdom and about 20 other countries would lead a coordinated maritime and naval effort to support the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump also expressed optimism about future ties with Iran, saying he had “got along very well” with Iranian leaders involved in the talks and hoped the agreement would lead to a positive relationship between the two countries. (Newswire)
