The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the recommendations of a committee chaired by the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretary to allocate housing units to an additional eight displaced residents, beyond the initial 29 families affected by the land acquisition process for Phase III of the Baseline Road Extension Project.
The committee had earlier facilitated the resettlement of 29 unauthorized families through the Sarasavi Uyana housing scheme, implemented by the Urban Development Authority.
However, field inquiries revealed special circumstances, including households with larger floor areas than the newly allocated units, multiple sub‑families living together at the time of acquisition, and unmarried individuals with special needs.
Taking these grievances into account, the committee recommended further allocations, which the Cabinet has now endorsed through a proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development. (Newswire)
