The Court of Appeal today (17) suspended further proceedings in the writ petition filed by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Waruna Jayasundara, who sought an order preventing his arrest in connection with the Easter Sunday terrorist attack investigations.

The Deputy Solicitor General, appearing for the Attorney General, informed the bench that at this stage no decision has been taken to arrest Jayasundara. The assurance was noted by the bench comprising Justices Shashi Mahendran and Adithya Patabendige, which then concluded the examination of the petition.

The petition had earlier prompted the Court to advise the Attorney General to consider the possibility of transferring Jayasundara to another area. Submissions made today confirmed that the Inspector General of Police has already forwarded the relevant recommendation to the National Police Commission.

With the Attorney General’s undertaking that no arrest decision has yet been made, the Court announced that further hearings on the petition would be suspended. (Newswire)
