Why so many players are wearing pink boots at World Cup

The sea of pink football boots seen across the FIFA World Cup 2026 is no coincidence, with leading sportswear brands deliberately choosing the bright colour to maximise visibility and player confidence.

According to reports, manufacturers including Nike, Adidas and Puma have all launched pink-themed boot collections for the tournament, resulting in many of the world’s top players wearing similar footwear on football’s biggest stage.

Nike’s global football footwear team said research found athletes often feel more confident when wearing bold and bright colours.

“What we’ve been hearing consistently from the athlete and the consumer, especially when it comes to big moments, is that bright colours give them confidence,” Nike executive Odinga Nimako told The Athletic.

He explained that pink was selected because it stands out visually against the green playing surface and remains highly visible both inside stadiums and on television broadcasts.

The colour also benefits from the fact that none of the 48 teams competing at the World Cup are wearing pink kits, helping the boots stand out even more.

While most players have adopted the bright designs, there are some notable exceptions. Lionel Messi has been wearing a special white-and-blue Adidas boot, while Cristiano Ronaldo was given a custom pair of gold boots for Portugal’s World Cup opener.

The trend has become one of the most noticeable visual features of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with pink boots appearing in almost every match. (Newswire)
