
Four police officers were injured and four suspects arrested following a confrontation during an anti-drug operation in Deraniyagala yesterday.
According to Police, officers attached to the Avissawella Division Anti-Corruption Unit, acting on information regarding an alleged drug trafficking operation in the Hambanawela area, carried out a raid while dressed in civilian clothing.
During attempts to arrest suspects, several individuals allegedly obstructed police duties and confronted the officers, resulting in injuries to four policemen.
The injured officers were admitted to the Avissawella and Deraniyagala hospitals for treatment.
Police said four suspects have been arrested so far in connection with obstructing police duties.
An independent investigation has been launched under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Avissawella Division III.
Police said the incident would not deter future operations and that continuous raids would be carried out in the area.
