Delft Island to receive solar-powered electricity under hybrid energy project

A hybrid renewable energy project is being implemented to provide electricity to Delft Island and two other northern islands using solar and wind power, replacing the existing diesel-powered electricity generation system.

The project covers Delft, Nainativu and Analaitivu islands, where electricity has traditionally been supplied through diesel generators, which authorities say are costly to operate, environmentally harmful and logistically difficult due to the need to transport fuel by sea.

Under the project, electricity will be generated through an off-grid hybrid renewable energy system combining a 1.7 MW solar power plant, a 750 kW wind power plant and a 2.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). An advanced Energy Management System (EMS) will also be installed to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.

Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka recently inspected the progress of the project and instructed officials to expedite its implementation.

The Minister said the project is expected to significantly improve the quality of life of residents in the three islands by providing an uninterrupted power supply, while supporting economic activities, particularly the fisheries sector, and enhancing public services such as healthcare and education.

The inspection was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, the Indian Consulate General in Jaffna and other institutions involved in the power sector. (Newswire)
