Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide an additional grant of ¥400 million to support Sri Lanka’s Digital Television (Digital TV) Project, as the government moves to accelerate the nationwide transition to digital broadcasting.

The funding was announced following a special discussion between the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Ministry of Finance’s Department of External Resources (ERD) on June 18 to review the project’s progress and address implementation challenges.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister of Finance Anil Jayantha and Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, also confirmed plans to officially launch Sri Lanka’s digital television service in 2029.

According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, the additional JICA grant will fund a nationwide public awareness campaign to educate consumers about the new digital television service once the project is completed.

The meeting also reviewed financial and administrative measures required to expedite the remaining construction and technical work without delays.

Officials further revealed that a separate Technical Cooperation Project is also being implemented to support the successful completion of the Digital TV Project.

Representatives from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the Digital TV Project, the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Department of External Resources and the Ministry of Finance attended the discussions. (Newswire)
