Maadel fishermen launch satyagraha outside Presidential Secretariat

A group of Maadel (seine) fishers have launched a satyagraha in front of the Presidential Secretariat, demanding clarity on the future of their industry.

Members of the All‑Island Maadel Association claimed that the protest was launched after authorities failed to announce a proper procedure or decision regarding their livelihood.

Association Secretary R. A. Dilruk Fernando said that following discussions with the President in February this year, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) had conducted a research.

He further said that it has been five months since the conclusion of the research by NARA, but no solution has been provided by the authorities to their issue.

Dilruk Fernando said that the fishermen will remain at the location today and tomorrow, adding that they expect a solution to be provided by Wednesday.

The issue stems from the proposed ban on tractor-mounted winches for Maadel (seine net) fishing.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, environmental damage caused by violations of the Seine Fishing Regulations by certain operators prompted the restrictions. (Newswire)
