Sri Lanka Railways has imported five crane systems from Finland for the new railway workshop under construction at Ratmalana as part of efforts to modernise Sri Lanka’s railway maintenance operations.

The crane systems have been procured under the Colombo Suburban Railway Project, which is being implemented with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

According to Sri Lanka Railways, the imported equipment is valued at US$1,352,342.73 and will be installed at the new workshop currently under construction at the Ratmalana railway yard.

The shipment includes two electrically operated double-girder overhead travelling cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes each, two 15-tonne cranes for lifting engines and bogies, and one 10-tonne crane.

The department said locomotive maintenance operations at the new workshop are expected to commence later this year, once the crane systems are installed.

The new equipment will significantly reduce the time required for locomotive and bogie maintenance, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the reliability of Sri Lanka’s railway services. (Newswire)
