A three‑day dengue control programme commences today (24) as authorities intensify efforts to curb the spread of the disease during the southwest monsoon season.

The campaign will run from today (24) until Friday, June 26. The initiative will be implemented across 600 Grama Niladhari divisions, targeting high‑risk areas with coordinated clean‑up and prevention measures.

The programme will involve government institutions, schools, and local government bodies, with a circular outlining short‑term dengue control steps already prepared.

The decision was taken at a high‑level discussion held on Monday (22) at the Presidential Secretariat, chaired by Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Officials reviewed both short‑term and long‑term strategies to combat the rapidly spreading dengue threat linked to the monsoon rains.

According to latest data from the National Dengue Control Unit, the number of dengue patients reported in the country has now increased to 47,530, and the number of dengue deaths reported during the past year is 29. (Newswire)
