The Sri Lanka Police have stressed that a formal training licence is mandatory for instructors conducting lessons in driving schools, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone training drivers without such authorization.

Head of the Traffic and Road Safety Range, DIG W.P.J. Senadheera said many driving schools hold training licences, but in practice, lessons are often conducted by individuals without proper certification.

“We have now instructed that anyone doing driving lessons must hold a driving training licence. If not, legal action will be taken,” he told the media.

DIG Senadheera noted that youngsters who undergo improper training and obtain licences are disproportionately involved in road accidents. He explained that youth drivers often lack control over speed and fail to follow road signs or rules, leading to accidents.

DIG Senadheera further said that discussions are currently underway with the Motor Traffic Department regarding the licencing process, with emphasis on ensuring that only certified instructors are permitted to train learners. (Newswire)
