India and Pakistan held a fresh round of unofficial “Track 2” talks in Colombo and Bangkok earlier this week, according to a report by WION News.
The report said the meetings focused on strengthening crisis-management mechanisms and preventing future escalations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Delegates from both countries also discussed issues related to terrorism and water, while exploring ways to channel the discussions into formal government-level dialogue.
Track 2 diplomacy involves unofficial discussions between retired officials, former diplomats, academics, military personnel and policy experts, rather than serving government representatives.
According to WION, the talks come despite official dialogue between India and Pakistan remaining frozen following heightened tensions after the May 2025 conflict triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack.
The report said several rounds of Track 2 discussions have been held in neutral locations in recent months, with Colombo and Bangkok hosting the latest meetings.
Neither the Indian nor Pakistani governments have publicly acknowledged the backchannel talks, WION reported. (Newswire)
