The Ministry of Health and Mass Media has taken the initiative to install four new cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) units in state hospitals over the next week as part of a Rs. 1.2 billion initiative to expand access to advanced cardiac care and reduce waiting lists for heart disease treatment.

Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has instructed the implementation of the programme, under which one cath lab will be installed at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on June 27, another at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila on June 30, and two more at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo on July 2.

Each cath lab unit is valued at Rs. 300 million, bringing the total investment to Rs. 1.2 billion.

The project is part of the government’s efforts to modernize diagnostic and treatment services for cardiovascular diseases. The four hospitals will receive Canon Alphenix Core+ Evolve Edition cardiac catheterisation systems equipped with advanced imaging and artificial intelligence technology.

The new systems will support faster, safer and minimally invasive procedures, reducing the need for open-heart surgery while improving patient outcomes.

The technology is expected to shorten the duration of complex coronary interventions, improve workflow inside cath labs and enhance clinical decision-making by displaying multiple medical images simultaneously on a single monitor.

The addition of the four cath lab units is expected to reduce waiting times for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular diseases while providing patients with faster, more accurate and more efficient care. (Newswire)
