The Badulla High Court has postponed the sentencing of SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri and another accused until July 28 after previously finding them guilty over the assault of police officers in 2019.

The case relates to an incident near the Bandarawela town roundabout, where an argument broke out after a police jeep overtook a convoy carrying the MP. Several police officers were allegedly assaulted during the altercation.

The court had found Wijesiri, his driver Bandula Ratnayake, and former ministerial security officer Rasika Karunatilaka guilty on charges including obstructing public officers, voluntarily causing hurt, and issuing death threats to two individuals.

When the case was called today for sentencing, the court was informed that the first accused, Bandula Ratnayake, had died. Accordingly, sentencing for the remaining accused was deferred until July 28. (Newswire)
