Sri Lanka Cricket’s proposed new constitution will introduce major governance reforms, including independent directors, stronger accountability measures, and mandatory female representation in leadership, members of the Cricket Transformation Committee revealed today.

Addressing the committee’s monthly media briefing, Honorary Secretary Prakash Schaffter said the draft constitution has reached an advanced stage and has been prepared after studying governance models used by the ICC and leading cricket boards, including those of England, Australia and South Africa.

The committee said former ICC Head of Legal David Becker had been engaged to provide international expertise and ensure the new constitution aligns with ICC governance standards.

Committee Chairman Eran Wickramaratne said the draft is expected to be forwarded to the Legal Draftsman’s Department and the Attorney General’s Department before being presented to Parliament, although no fixed timeline could be given due to the legislative process.

President’s Counsel Dinal Phillips said the proposed constitution represents a “paradigm shift” from previous versions, with stricter eligibility criteria.

The committee also confirmed that the new governance structure will include women in leadership positions and incorporate stronger checks and balances to improve transparency and accountability.

Officials added that the draft remains subject to further review and approval before it can be enacted. (Newswire)
