A video circulating on social media showing a dog being beaten to death with a club has been identified by police as an incident that took place in front of a Sathosa outlet within the Pothupitiya Police Division on August 7, 2025.
Police said that, following an investigation launched on the basis of a complaint, two suspects were arrested on August 27, 2025, and produced before court. They were subsequently released on bail.
Investigations have revealed that the dog had bitten a nine-year-old child on the day it was killed and that the two suspects arrested are relatives of the child.
According to police, the suspects themselves submitted the dog’s head for an approved medical examination. The report confirmed that the animal had been infected with rabies.
Pothupitiya Police are continuing investigations into the incident. The next court hearing has been fixed for August 20, 2026. (Newswire)
