A heartwarming video of a little girl walking through a paddy field with a tiny porcupine, which has captured millions of hearts around the world, was filmed in Sri Lanka and not Bangladesh as falsely claimed on social media.
The footage has been widely shared across multiple platforms with captions claiming the child is from Bangladesh. The false claim has also been repeated by several international media outlets, including The Telegraph.
However, Newswire can independently confirm that the video was filmed in Sri Lanka.
The earliest known upload of the video was made on June 11 by a Sri Lankan Facebook user, with the original caption written in Sinhala. The same account has since shared several additional videos featuring the little girl and the porcupine, all accompanied by Sinhala-language captions.
The account lists Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, as its location, further confirming the video’s origin.
Bangladesh-based fact-checking outlet Stream also independently verified the video’s origin through a reverse image search and concluded that the viral footage was filmed in Sri Lanka.
The video continues to attract millions of views worldwide, with many describing the little girl and her tiny porcupine companion as a real-life Disney moment. (Newswire)
