Sri Lankan mountaineer Johann Peries has etched his name into history by becoming the first Sri Lankan to summit Mount Denali, North America’s highest peak at 6,190 metres.
He reached the summit on June 17, 2026, marking a long‑awaited triumph after years of setbacks, injuries, and two failed attempts.
Denali, renowned as one of the most unforgiving and technically demanding climbs in the world, tested Peries’ endurance and determination.
His success came during what experts have described as one of the most challenging climbing seasons in recent years.
According to expedition tracker Alan Arnette, Denali typically attracts between 1,000 and 1,100 climbers annually, but only a fraction reach the summit due to extreme weather and high‑altitude risks.
For Peries, the achievement carries symbolic weight beyond the mountain itself. He is the first and only Sri Lankan to pursue the Seven Summits challenge, the quest to climb the highest peak on each continent.
With Denali now conquered, he has successfully completed six of the seven climbs, leaving only Aconcagua in Argentina to complete the journey.
In a video message, soon after reaching the summit of Mount Denali, Johann Peries said it was a very proud moment not just for him, but the whole of Sri Lanka.
“Sri Lankan flag flies high, the highest point on the North American Continent, once again creating history. This is not just for me, this is for the whole nation. We are a nation of resilience and determination,” he said. (Newswire)
