Labour Ministry orders probe into Ceylon Newspapers over complaints

Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe has instructed the Commissioner General of Labour to conduct a full investigation into complaints against Ceylon Newspapers Ltd, including the alleged non-payment of Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF) contributions.

In a media release issued today (3), the Labour Ministry said the investigation will also cover complaints relating to the alleged non-payment of salaries and gratuity, as well as the alleged termination of employees.

The ministry said the directive was issued following complaints made by employees.

According to the statement, the Deputy Minister instructed the Commissioner General of Labour to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the complaints lodged against the company.

Ceylon Newspapers Ltd, which publishes several newspapers including Mawbima and Ceylon Today, is owned by former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles. (Newswire)
