The leaders of the People’s Joint Opposition met the Mahanayake of the Amarapura Chapter, Most Venerable Karagoda Uyangoda Maithree Moorthi Thera, at the Devram Vehera Temple in Pannipitiya on Thursday to brief him on several issues facing the country.

According to a statement issued by the alliance, the discussions focused on the country’s ongoing economic difficulties, including the foreign exchange shortage, the growing budget deficit and what it described as the unfair tax burden placed on the public.

The delegation also raised concerns over safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, challenges facing the legal sector, delays in repairing public roads damaged by the recent “Ditwa” disaster, and what it said were threats to Buddhism and religious values.

The meeting was led by People’s Joint Opposition Convener Professor G. L. Peiris and was attended by Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chairman Nimal Siripala de Silva, United National Party Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, UNP National Organiser Sagala Ratnayaka, SLFP Treasurer Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Sri Lanka Mahajana Party Senior Vice President Sameera Senanayake.
