Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s withdrawal from the 2026 Lanka Premier League has come under fresh scrutiny after the Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter signed for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League (GSL), which is scheduled to be played during the same period as the LPL.
Gurbaz was picked by the Kandy Royals at the LPL player draft but later announced that he would not be joining the franchise, stating that he had committed to playing in Afghanistan’s domestic Shpageeza Cricket League.
In a statement shared on social media at the time, Gurbaz thanked the Kandy Royals for placing their trust in him and said he wanted to inform the franchise well in advance so they would have sufficient time to find a replacement.
However, the Guyana Amazon Warriors have now announced Gurbaz as a replacement for the injured Glenn Phillips in their squad for the 2026 Global Super League. The tournament will be held in Guyana from July 23 to August 1, overlapping with the Lanka Premier League.
The latest development has raised questions over the reason cited by Gurbaz for pulling out of the LPL, with fans on social media questioning why he is now available to play in another franchise tournament during the same window. (Newswire)
