The Committee for Protecting the Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) has alleged that inmates transferred from the Negombo Prison following the recent deadly violence are being subjected to severe physical assault at other prisons.

In an urgent notice issued on Tuesday night, the organisation said it has received continuous information indicating that transferred inmates are being tortured at the prisons where they have been relocated.

The CPRP claimed that inmates transferred to Angunakolapelessa Prison had been severely beaten, with some allegedly suffering broken legs and serious injuries, including lacerations to their backs.

The organisation also alleged that preparations were underway to carry out further assaults on inmates transferred to Welikada Prison.

The CPRP urged the authorities to immediately intervene to stop any such assaults, ensure injured inmates receive prompt medical treatment, and guarantee the safety of all prisoners transferred from Negombo Prison. (Newswire)
