The government has issued an Extraordinary Gazette establishing a new prison at Mahamodara in Galle.
The gazette, signed by Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, was issued under the powers vested in the Minister by Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance.
According to the gazette, the new prison will be named “Mahamodara” and will have jurisdiction covering the whole of Sri Lanka.
The Justice Ministry said that the prison will operate on a temporary basis in a section of the former Mahamodara Hospital, which has been closed. The move comes amid efforts to address pressures on the country’s prison system following recent developments. (Newswire)
