
An Indian national inmate has died during the recent tense situation at the Negombo Prison, the Police confirmed.
The Police Media Division said the deceased is a 73‑year‑old Indian national, adding that reporting of his death was delayed as time was required to confirm his identity.
Police noted that the circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be ascertained, with a post‑mortem examination currently underway.
They further revealed that the inmate had been in custody since 2025 on charges of bringing into Sri Lanka 1.908 kilograms of Kush narcotics by air and possessing the substance.
